The Web Design Certificate Program - available on a Mac or PC

This program is taught from a design perspective, is project-driven, and is updated frequently to meet the demands of today's employers. Why wait when you can be finished your schooling and employed before others even start their program at other schools?

I just recently graduated from the WDD program at Victoria School of Business and Technology. Small class sizes, highly knowledgeable instructors and a super friendly /professional atmosphere makes this course stand out from the others. I was most impressed by the wide range of course content. The instructors would show you the basic starting points of learning each new software or task. Then an opportunity to explore ideas and create (kinda feels like just sitting around playing on the computer!). After getting familiar and comfortable with how things worked, skills would then be applied as needed in the Web Design industry. Overall the WDC course was more than I ever expected! Thank you VSBT and NorthStudio.com!

Web Design and Internet Marketing Program Outline:

Objective
During this 11 Week Intensive course you will learn how to build professional web sites with experts in a Busy Design and Development school/Studio! Our unique school is located in the heart of a fully operational web development and small business solutions provider, our parent company: northStudio.com.

The Web Design Certificate Program provides a complete set of essential skills for Web Site Designers, using the most up-to-date techniques and software available. Use Adobe Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 products to produce industry standard web sites. Learn to read and write HTML and CSS code. Learn the basics of content management systems like Drupal and WordPress.

Week 1:
• Computer Fundamentals. Learn the fundamentals of computers. We’ll look at hardware requirements, expansion options, storage, backup techniques, open source software, and other topics such as desktop versus laptop. We’ll also discuss hardware issues and requirements along with various accessories such as track balls and graphic tablets.

• Domain Names, Hosting Plans. Review the process of buying a domain name and getting a hosting plan for your website.

• Project File Management. Nothing builds up faster then project files. A small web site may have 20 - 30 pages. To create those pages may involve over 100 support files including image formats, authoring files, text content and research information. File management is essential from the beginning. If proper file management techniques are not started from the beginning of the project than problems arise, always at a time when you don’t need them!

• Project Organization. Where do you start? How do you develop a project plan? Storyboards are just one of the tools that are examined to help and assist in project development and organization.

• Web Design Issues and Web Standards. We’ll examine the current web standards that you’ll need to know and how they impact your site design. We’ll also look at design issues that you will encounter when considering web standards and the Windows and Mac browsers.

Week 2:
• Adobe Photoshop. The professional standard in desktop digital imaging and leader of the Photoshop digital imaging line, this program allows you to not only manipulate images but enhance vector illustrations created in Illustrator. Use this powerful tool for creating and designing web page mock ups and layouts.

Week 3:
• Adobe Dreamweaver. With Dreamweaver, web developers go from start to finish, creating and maintaining basic websites to advanced applications that support best practices and the latest technologies. This is the industry standard. Create XHTML based web pages using CSS to control the layout and look. Insert Flash files, use Javascript and Spry for drop-down menus, forms and interactivity. Create templates, library items and more.

Week 4:
• Vector Graphics / Web Graphics. Use Adobe Illustrator to create vector based graphics for print and web. Wrap photographs around 3D objects and use them in layout, photographs and web projects.

Week 5:
• Adobe Fireworks. Fireworks takes all of your original Photoshop creations and prepares them for use on web pages. Fireworks is also a powerful tool for creating page layouts and such web standards as animated GIF files. Vector based layouts and artwork straight from Fireworks to your web page.

Week 6:
• Flash. With Flash Professional, design and author interactive content rich with video, graphics, and animation for truly unique, engaging websites, and presentations. Learn how to design not only animations but complex interactive menus.

Week 7:
• HTML 5. Develop your websites using the latest HTML standards. HTML 5 has new features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have previously been dependent on third-party browser plug-ins.

• Cascading Style Sheets 3 (CSS). Explore the wide design and interactive options of CSS based web pages. Using CSS you can take your visual concepts from Photoshop and Fireworks and transfer them to reality using CSS and Dreamweaver. Completing the CSS portion we revisit Fireworks to explore page layouts and how to translate them to a working web page.

Week 8 and 9:
Open source content management systems. You’ll have an introduction to the web’s two most powerful, open source content management systems. Content managements systems like Drupal and WordPress gives client users the ability to add, modify and delete their websites' content with out any programming knowledge.

Week 10:
• Search Engine Optimization. You’ll be introduced to Search Engine Optimization and how it impacts your CSS and file management.

• Internet Business and Marketing. No longer a tool for socializing and sharing files, the Internet is big business. It is a powerful medium to reach a global audience. This week we examine how people perceive and retain information, what’s involved in purchasing domain names and what options you have with hosting plans. We’ll also delve into the business side of the internet.

Week 11:
• Project Week. This is where you start to put it all together. This time is spent on working on your own project. The instructor is in class for the entire period but all the time is dedicated to project work and development.
