Print Design and Desktop Publishing Certificate

The 100 hour Design for Print Certificate Program will give you all the tools you need to prepare you for the world of print design.
We start by teaching you the philosophy of graphic design. Then we progress to an intense learning of the essential design programs, and understanding of the printing process. To finish, you get a chance to create a portfolio that will be critiqued and perfected so that when you leave you will have all the tools needed to succeed.
VSBT's up-to-date training is constantly evolving as technology improves. Experienced teachers (who are practicing Graphic designers) guide you through the process and give you insight from their experience. Learn the fundamentals of publishing and its related software applications by creating a full color book and two-color brochure, from conception to output. The class will work on a variety of projects that will act as a guideline to understanding current color management practices and tools. The process will also include the modern photographic RAW workflow and how to prepare digital captures for output.
Program Overview:
Desktop Publishing and Typography
Topics include: designing with the correct typeface; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks.
Color Management
Color Management Topics range from understanding color, ICC (International Color Consortium) profiles, soft-proofing, monitor calibration, and what kind of practical processes you can apply to your workflow in order to achieve predictable and reproducible results on screen and print media.
Prepress
Prepress Covers a whole range of issues that show you how to prepare your files to maximize print quality. We also teach you how to create "printer friendly" PDF files.
Adobe Creative Suite With Adobe Photoshop CS3
Learn how to prepare your bitmap files for maximum impact. Topics will include how to do color correction "by the numbers", sharpening, adding contrast, how to create complex masking and path selections, how to use RGB, CMYK and LAB color spaces for color correction, and understanding Adobe . In Adobe InDesign CS3, the focus will be on using the application's powerful capabilities for creating multi-page layouts. All aspects of the program will be covered in depth, with emphasis on the essential time-saving features: paragraph and character styles; swatches; master pages; and layers. With Adobe Illustrator CS3, you will learn how to leverage this powerful program to create complex vector graphics that can be used on their own or as way of creating publications with more impact.
